Limitations of Mobile Games

November 25, 2008

Mobile phone gaming has proved to be a major revolution in the field of gaming. But as it is commonly said that there are always two sides of the same coin, mobile phone gaming suffers from various disadvantages as well.

Firstly, mobile phones often suffer from the limitation of having low processing speed the devices used by various users and therefore end up being limited in scope. Another problem faced by various publishers and creators is that they are not able to describe it to the extent that a customer would be able to have complete information to purchase it immediately. Currently, these games are sold solely through Operators or Mobile Networks including GPRS due to which only some lines are displayed or screenshot to explain it the customer. Moreover, different games are available in formats such as .sis, java etc. due to compatibility issues with different mobile phone companies thereby creating a monopoly of games for some cell phone companies and leading to intense competition. For example, Motorola uses a .jar or java format whereas Nokia uses .sis format.

To overcome these shortcomings, creators and publishers follow two tactics:

Using powerful brands or licenses which suggest high quality of games being published; or

Using famous and recognized play patterns

The above mentioned strategies help reduce the professed level of threat that is felt by consumers while deciding which game to purchase or download. These licenses provide an assurance of quality to the customers.

Recent improvements in these cell phone games consist of single and multiplayer as well as modern graphics. Rapidly discovering popularity is multiplayer games because of the fact that the creators get the benefit of playing opposite new people which is an extension of cell phone connectivity.

Due to the latest boom of online gambling, companies are now taking an advantage of cell phone market to draw the attention of various customers. Taking an example of Ongame who are the creators of PokerRoom which came up in 2005, created a mobile phone version of the poker game which was available in fake money as well as actual money which can be played in single or multi player. Moreover, various companies such as SmartCell Technology are coming up with various cross-platform games such as that can be played on a PC as well as a cell phone.

With the introduction of Bluetooth gaming, multiplayer player games are becoming more and more popular by providing users the freedom to move while playing and allowing them to have dedicated screens so as to enjoy their game.

The games on the mobile phones are as good as the games on the computer as far as the texture is concerned which is used in the production of games like these. Mobile games which are modern mainly offer the players controls which are effective on the characters that they play with. FPS’s old version and the old version of RPG games have been converted into the gaming standards of the mobile games, which enhances the market to major wider level. Where nearly all kinds of games are available on each platform for mobiles, depending on mobile device which is being used, mainly on how it operates.

The utmost exciting game on the platform of the mobile are boards games, as usually it is harder on smaller screens to control the action keys in comparison to PSP screen which maybe provides the best resolution. Snake was the first game which was preinstalled into a mobile phone in 1997 on selected Nokia phone models. Since then the different kinds of snake games have become very popular and most-played  videogame worldwide, wuth over billions of people playing this game.

The technologies which are there on the device are used to play the games on the mobiles. There are different kinds of technologies which are commonly used for network games. For example SMS, MMS or GPRS. On the other hand the ones that plainly use the platform of the device for the game to run are the non networked applications. There are certain different ways of having the games onto your mobil phones. the games can be installed over the air or side loaded with a cable onto the phone, or they can be embedded on the device by the operator of the mobile or the OEM.. The radio network of the operator is what is mainly used to download mobile games, but some of the times when you purchase a phone the games are already loaded. You can also get mobile games on your handset via infrared connection, on the memory card or bluetooth.

Now lets talk about the history of mobile phones. People all over the world were greatly impressed by the creation of a cell phone mainly because the phone did not need any wires or cables, but major modernization of mobile phones started by the end of the 20th century, and people were not satisffied with little anymore, and  they all wanted more from their mobile phones. The style of candy bar mobile phone was one of the first handset to be introduced which had many features like the appearnce of the handset and also the handset’s calling capabilities which attracted the people alot and these features became more important to them. Games on the mobile phones were still a very new feature that could have been expected on the handset. Most of the games on the older handsets wwre not expansive and were not even popular like the console games, as the mobile’s hardware could not support high colour screen or sounds apart from the pitched beeps. The only animation  the was there were the black squares.”Snake” was one of the most common game on mobile phones apart from “brick”. These games were usually pre-installed on the handset and could not be removed or even copied, unlike the modern mobile phone games of today, which you mainly require to purchase. The graphic capabilities and the storage were highly improved with the introduction of the “camera phones” which by the way became very popular. The improvement in the graphic and storage meant only one thing better quality mobile games.

A little set back as far as mobile games are concerned is that the keypad of the handset is alot more different than a controller of a video game console. Also, cell phone games which are available are relatively short. But as of today, the graphics on the phones have improved greatly and can be compared with the 4th or 5th generation game console. Games like solitaire and tetris are some of the popular mobile phone games and do take up quite alot of space on the memory card and that is because people want to play the games. So mobile phone games have come a very long way
